35 Prominent Crypto Firms Rally for Official Bitcoin Emoji

A growing coalition of major cryptocurrency companies and organizations is pushing for Bitcoin to get its own official emoji in a new campaign called “Bitcoin Deserves an Emoji.”

Led by crypto lending platform Nexo, over 35 prominent crypto firms have joined the initiative to obtain 50,000 endorsements worldwide.

Within just a week of launching on April 2nd, the petition addressed to the Unicode Consortium, which oversees emoji standardization, has already garnered over 10,000 individual signatures.

High-profile companies backing the effort include Kraken, Polygon, Brave, Chainalysis, and BTC Inc. among others.

Recognizing Bitcoin’s Mainstream Status

The campaign argues that Bitcoin’s market dominance and widespread adoption as the preeminent cryptocurrency warrants its representation through a “unified symbol on all keyboards.”

As Nexo co-founder Kosta Kantchev stated,

“With 1.26 billion total Bitcoin addresses and 190,000+ professionals and tech pioneers pushing the global community forward, the Bitcoin Emoji is long overdue.”

For the crypto community, securing an official Bitcoin emoji is not just a symbolic gesture, but a significant step towards further mainstream adoption and legitimacy.

Drawing inspiration from successful past emoji campaigns by brands like Taco Bell and Tinder, organizers hope to create enough momentum to spur action from Unicode.

“Emojis, today’s digital lingua franca, play a critical role in how we communicate emotions, intentions, and concepts,” said Eleonor Genova, Head of Communications at Nexo. “For Bitcoin…an emoji would not only symbolize its legitimacy but also serve as an essential tool for education and mainstream acceptance.”

Bitcoin’s Cultural Impact and Global Movement

Genova emphasized that the initiative represents the “heartbeat of a global movement” resonating with the aspirations of Bitcoin’s vast community.

As the crypto space continues evolving beyond niche discussions, having an emoji allows Bitcoin’s presence and impact to be democratized and better understood worldwide.

The push comes at a significant time for Bitcoin, which recently hit new all-time highs and is gearing up for its fourth halving event expected later this month.

Advocates argue that as Bitcoin’s influence stretches into the mainstream – exemplified by the recent U.S. approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF – an emoji provides crucial representation beyond just the crypto realm.

“Now imagine Bitcoin not just living in wallets and exchanges, Crypto Twitter and crypto media, but living across billions of screens worldwide as its very own emoji symbol,” Genova stated.

“We’ve moved beyond the jargon of past bull runs and the fear of the past crypto winter; it’s time to recognize Bitcoin for what it truly is — a culture, not just a mere fleeting trend.”
