The operators of a cryptocurrency investment company based in the Central African Republic (CAR) mysteriously disappeared with a staggering $1.6 million in investor funds.
Clé du Succès, the company in question, had promised high returns on investments, attracting a significant number of investors, including prominent figures like lawmakers and senior government employees. This apparent scam has left hundreds of CAR residents in financial distress.
Clé du Succès, a crypto investment company registered in the CAR, initiated its operations in September, boasting a tantalizing promise of a 20% return on investment, a report said. As a duly registered entity with a tax identification number, it seemed to offer a legitimate opportunity for investors.
However, the shocking twist came in early October when Clé du Succès abruptly closed its doors, vanishing along with approximately $1.6 million in investor funds. This sudden disappearance has left both investors and employees in a state of uncertainty, unsure of the fate of their investments and livelihoods.
The CAR’s police have swiftly launched an investigation into this alarming incident. The Research and Investigation Section (SRI) is leading the probe to unravel the extent of the alleged fraudulent activities and hold those responsible accountable.
What makes this crypto scam particularly disconcerting is the presence of high-profile victims among the affected individuals. Lawmakers, senior government employees, and traders are reported to be among those who fell prey to the fraudulent promises of Clé du Succès.
This incident casts a shadow over the CAR’s cryptocurrency landscape, which had a unique status in Africa. The CAR became the first country on the continent to declare Bitcoin as legal tender in April 2022.
President Faustin-Archange Touadéra directly endorsed this move, which was seen as a significant stride toward cryptocurrency adoption. However, the subsequent overturning of the Bitcoin law by a court ruling has thrown a wrench into these plans.
With the law repealed CAR cryptocurrency investors who fall victim to scams similar to the one orchestrated by Clé du Succès find themselves without any legal recourse.
