In the legal proceedings against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried approach, the defense and prosecution have presented a list of questions they wish to ask prospective jurors, shedding light on the key themes that may emerge during the trial, set to begin on October 3.
Bankman-Fried’s defense team is keen to gauge the attitudes of potential jurors towards various topics, including cryptocurrency.
They want to know if jurors have invested in cryptocurrency and if their experiences have been positive or negative.
Additionally, they are interested in whether jurors believe that the failure of a cryptocurrency company should be solely attributed to its owners.
Effective altruism, a charitable philosophy closely associated with Bankman-Fried, is another area of interest.
The defense wants to understand prospective jurors’ thoughts on this philosophy, which emphasizes using one’s wealth to benefit others and improve the world.
Juror Opinions on Political Donations and ADHD
The proposed questions also delve into political contributions, inquiring whether jurors believe it is wrong to donate large sums of money to political candidates and lobbyists for self-interest.
Personal or professional experiences with individuals who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are also on the list, as Bankman-Fried himself takes ADHD medication.
On the prosecution side, the focus is on understanding potential jurors’ financial experiences.
They want to know if any jurors have invested in a start-up company and if they have ever suffered financial losses due to fraudulent activities.
Sam Bankman-Fried faces seven fraud-related charges regarding his involvement in the collapse of FTX in November.
Prosecutors allege he misappropriated customer funds from the platform for various purposes, including trading at crypto hedge fund Alameda Research, property acquisitions, and charitable and political donations.
Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
Bankman-Fried’s Bail Revocation and Preparation Challenges
Bankman-Fried’s journey to trial has been marked by challenges, including revoking his bail in August due to accusations of attempting to influence government witnesses.
While his defense has sought his temporary release for adequate trial preparation, the judge has denied this request, opting to have legal materials delivered to Bankman-Fried inside the detention center.
The proposed juror questions provide insight into the key issues that will likely be addressed during the trial. Judge Lewis A. Kaplan will question potential jurors, excluding those whose responses indicate a bias.
Subsequently, both prosecution and defense teams will be able to dismiss jurors they believe may not be favorable to their case.
