Pravjit Tiwana, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Asia Pacific (APAC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gemini Trust Co., is purportedly bidding farewell to the company, leaving a significant vacancy within the organization.
Mr Tiwana, who has served in pivotal roles at Gemini, including being at the helm of technological advancements and the company’s APAC ventures, is expected to conclude his tenure by the end of this month, Bloomberg reported, citing undisclosed sources.
Prior to his tenure at Gemini, Pravjit Tiwana accrued extensive experience, notably a six-year tenure as a General Manager at Amazon Web Services. His responsibilities at Gemini encompassed steering product development, engineering, and design.
Tiwana also played a vital role in the company’s expansion efforts in India, contributing to the establishment and growth of Gemini’s footprint in the Asian market.
Resignation Amidst Industry Challenges
Tiwana’s departure follows the exit of his colleague Noah Perlman, who previously served as the Chief Operating Officer at Gemini, departing to join Binance earlier this year.
Gemini, a cryptocurrency exchange founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, has faced a series of ongoing industry challenges. The company has been entangled in a prolonged tussle with crypto lender Genesis and its parent company, Digital Currency Group (DCG). This discord even led to public confrontations between DCG’s founder, Barry Silbert, and the Winklevoss twins.
Moreover, regulatory tensions have heightened the company’s challenges. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) took legal action against Gemini, alleging the company’s Earn program, a joint venture with Genesis, constituted an unregistered offer and sale of securities. Tyler Winklevoss has expressed discontent, characterizing the lawsuit as baseless.
In a separate legal episode, the New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Gemini and DCG, alleging customer deception to the tune of approximately $1.1 billion. Despite DCG’s intent to contest these allegations, the Winklevoss twins have publicly criticized the decision to litigate against the exchange.
Neither Pravjit Tiwana nor Gemini has immediately responded to requests for comments or official statements regarding the reported departure, leaving details regarding the circumstances of the exit undisclosed.
Tiwana’s exit from Gemini comes at a time when the company is navigating a complex landscape of regulatory challenges and internal disagreements, raising questions about the future trajectory of the firm as it grapples with talent retention, legal disputes, and regulatory compliance.
