North Korean hackers have been identified posing as journalists and South Korean government officials in a targeted effort to steal cryptocurrency.
The elaborate scheme involved the hackers utilizing impersonation tactics to expropriate victims’ user IDs and profiles, ultimately gaining unauthorized access to their cryptocurrency trading accounts.
According to a report by South Korea’s National Police Agency, the cybercriminals targeted approximately 19 victims between March and October. Their modus operandi included posing as officials and journalists to carry out the theft.
The hackers stole user credentials and executed crypto mining programs on more than 147 proxy servers they had seized.
Less than a year ago, the same group of hackers employed malicious software to steal cryptocurrency, raising concerns about the potential loss of property and valuable assets. This previous attack involved distributing ransomware, coercing victims to pay money and valuables to regain control of their virtual assets.
In response to this wave of cyberattacks, law enforcement authorities have taken action to mitigate the threat. 42 fraudulent websites operated by North Korean hackers have been shut down to prevent further deception.
This collaborative effort between the police and the Korea Internet & Security Agency aims to safeguard individuals from falling victim to these impersonation tactics.
Additionally, the police plan to provide the government’s intelligence and cyber experts with a comprehensive list of the servers used by the hackers. This information could prove crucial in identifying and neutralizing further threats from this cybercriminal group.
Historical Context and Rise of North Korean Hackers
The report also sheds light on previous instances where North Korean hackers have posed as government officials for financial gain.
An incident last May involved hackers sending emails impersonating an assistant of Rep. Tae Yong-ho, a lawmaker of the conservative People Power Party who defected from North Korea to South Korea.
This recent revelation follows a growing trend of cyber threats originating from North Korea. Earlier reports indicated that the Lazarus Group, a notorious hacking group backed by the North Korean government, had transferred substantial funds across different blockchain networks.
Such incidents highlight the persistent and evolving nature of cyber threats posed by North Korean hackers.
The targeting of South Korean government agencies by North Korean hackers underscores the need for robust cybersecurity measures in the crypto space. Individuals and organizations must remain vigilant against sophisticated cyber threats as the crypto landscape evolves.
The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and cybersecurity agencies play a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Users are strongly advised to exercise caution, employ robust security practices, and stay informed about potential threats to mitigate the risk of falling victim to such malicious activities.
