PayPal Links to Bring BTC, ETH, and PYUSD Into Text and Email Payments

KEY FACTS

  • PayPal Links allow one-time payments through text, email, or chat, with launch support for BTC, ETH, and PYUSD.
  • Personal transfers via Links, including crypto, remain exempt from IRS Form 1099-K reporting.
  • Q2 Total Payment Volume rose 6% year-over-year to $443.5 billion, highlighting PayPal’s growing payment ecosystem.
  • PYUSD maintained its $1 peg with a $1.34 billion market cap, while Bitcoin and Ethereum prices stayed flat.

PayPal continues to explore the future of crypto by making digital payments more seamless and conversational. On September 15, the company introduced PayPal Links, a feature that lets users create one-time personalized links to send or request money through text, email, or chat. The rollout begins in the United States and will extend to the United Kingdom, Italy, and other markets later this month.

The company confirmed that cryptocurrency transfers will soon be added to the same peer-to-peer flow. At launch, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and PayPal’s dollar-backed stablecoin PYUSD will be supported. Payments can move between PayPal, Venmo, and compatible external wallets, broadening access to crypto in everyday transfers.

In a bid not to burden users with unnecessary tax filings, PayPal made it clear that personal transfers, including gifts, reimbursements, and shared expenses, will remain outside IRS Form 1099-K reporting, whether in crypto or fiat.

Each link is private, tied to a single transaction, and expires if unclaimed within ten days. Users can generate a personalized link in the PayPal app with payment or request details, then share it across text, email, or chat. Once the recipient taps the link, the transfer is completed or accepted, with funds arriving instantly for those holding a PayPal Balance. Reminders or cancellations can be issued if necessary.

Executives positioned the service as a way to make payments feel seamless. Crypto lead Jose Fernandez da Ponte said links were built to make sending money “as natural as a message,” while COO Alex Chriss Scotti noted the focus was on lowering friction so that sharing a link feels no different from sending a note.

PayPal World Gains, PYUSD Holds Steady, Markets Unmoved

The launch extends PayPal World, the company’s effort to connect wallets and streamline peer-to-peer activity. Total Payment Volume (TPV) increased by 6% year-over-year in Q2 to $443.5 billion.

Meanwhile, PYUSD held firm near its $1 peg over the past 24 hours, trading between $0.9987 and $1.001, with a market capitalization of about $1.34 billion supported by steady liquidity.

Ethereum traded flat around $4,500, while Bitcoin stayed near $116,500, showing little movement. PYUSD’s stability reinforced its role as a settlement asset, but PayPal’s push to fold it into conversational payments may help bring stablecoins into broader everyday use.
