Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled a vision for Ethereum’s future that could revolutionize the blockchain world.
During his keynote address at Korea Blockchain Week, Buterin shared insights into the network’s ongoing struggles with centralization and scalability.
He revealed that Ethereum’s upcoming upgrades could bring full nodes to mobile devices, paving the way for a more decentralized and scalable future.
The centralization of nodes has been a persistent challenge for the Ethereum network.
Currently, most of Ethereum’s 5,901 active nodes rely on centralized web providers such as Amazon Web Services, raising concerns about the network’s vulnerability to centralized points of failure.
The Role of Full Nodes
Buterin highlighted six fundamental problems that must be addressed to combat centralization within Ethereum.
Among these challenges, full nodes emerged as a critical factor in the quest for greater decentralization.
To address this issue, Ethereum’s roadmap includes implementing “stateless clients” utilizing “Verkle Trees.” These innovations aim to significantly reduce the hardware requirements for running full nodes on the Ethereum network.
“Today, it takes hundreds of gigabytes of data to run a node. With stateless clients, you can run a node on basically zero.”
Buterin explained
Statelessness, in this context, involves diminishing the network’s reliance on nodes to store the entire state of the Ethereum blockchain.
Instead, only limited space is needed to validate transactions, potentially opening the door for running full nodes on mobile devices.
While this represents a transformative step toward decentralization, Buterin acknowledged that the technical challenges associated with implementing statelessness may require a considerable timeframe, possibly a decade or even two.
Beyond Full Nodes
In addition to addressing complete node centralization, Buterin also emphasized the importance of other factors in Ethereum’s journey toward decentralization.
These include the widespread distribution of staked ETH and simplifying documentation for developers and users.
In a recent message to the Reflexer Finance Discord community, Buterin proposed adding “non-dominant forms of staked ETH (excluding Lido)” as new collateral options on a stablecoin lending platform, demonstrating his commitment to expanding and diversifying Ethereum’s ecosystem.
Vitalik Buterin’s visionary insights offer hope for a future where blockchain technology becomes more accessible, inclusive, and resilient.
Realizing full nodes on mobile devices could mark a significant milestone in Ethereum’s journey toward a truly decentralized network.
